Three Cottontail Rabbits by Frank Lyne

This is part of a set of six Cottontail Rabbits made in 1983. The one on the right is made of walnut. The others are two of five cement castings made from the walnut rabbit. The one in the middle is made of one part Portland cement and three parts brick dust. The one on the left is one part Portland cement, one part brick dust and two parts lime. The three not shown are similar but with some variations in the lime/brick dust ratio.

The cement castings were all made by a simple sand mold process. The walnut rabbit was pressed into damp sand to make an impression. The cement/aggregate mixture was then poured into this impression and allowed to harden. Then the walnut rabbit was pressed into damp sand again to make an impression of its other half. More cement/aggregate mixture was poured into this impression. Then immediately the already hardened facing bunny half was laid on top of the wet cement and gently pressed against it so it would bond to it. After this hardened some minor filing was required to smooth the joint between the two pieces.
